About

Presented on Barbados' Emancipation Day, My Father's Shadow is a public screening and conversation that brings filmmakers and audiences together through a shared cinematic experience.

Centered on the acclaimed debut feature by Akinola Davies Jr., the programme creates space to reflect on memory, family, freedom, and the enduring relationship between personal stories and collective history.

The evening begins with a screening of My Father's Shadow and concludes with Beyond the Screen—a conversation with director Akinola Davies Jr., co-writer Wale Davies, and producer Rachel Dargavel, moderated by Ryan Wilfred and Amanda Haynes.

Rather than a conventional question-and-answer session, the discussion extends the experience of the film, inviting audiences to explore broader questions of cinema, collaboration, creative practice and the role of storytelling in shaping how we understand ourselves, our communities and the world around us.

The programme reflects West India Film Co.'s commitment to creating meaningful public encounters through cinema while fostering dialogue around African and Caribbean filmmaking, cultural exchange and the future of regional film practice. Through Beyond the Screen, each film becomes a point of departure for exploring the wider artistic, cultural and institutional questions shaping contemporary cinema.
